Fortunately, the Recording Academy has always been able
to call upon a wide array of musical experts, both members
and non-members, to serve on its Grammy screening committees.
Dating back to the late '50s, when legendary music figures
like John Hammond and Benny Carter took part in the first
Grammy screening committee meetings, and on up through last
October's meetings in Los Angeles, these screening committees
continue to be an indispensable part of the Grammy process.
That process begins in early August, when the national
awards staff starts processing all the entries which are
submitted by members and record companies over a two month
period. Basic information, such as release dates, record company
labels, artists' names and song titles, is verified, and the national
staff also conducts an internal screening process before handing
over the entries to the screening committees.
